Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology (AT) can be defined as any item, piece of equipment or product system that is used to increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

It has been particularly valuable in helping people with significant mobility, sensory and speech impairments, many of which can now participate in education, training and employment.

The most important, but not the only aspects of AT include:

Environmental control - accessible remote controls for turning on and off lights, opening doors, or using the telephone, and other daily living activities, e.g. switch or voice control of household devices.

Augmentative and alternative communication - devices for people who have communication difficulties.

Mobility - alternative control of powered wheelchairs, such as using a switch instead of a joystick to operate the chair.

Computer access - the techology that helps you perform PC operations.
