The Irish
Wheelchair Association operates a Motoring Advice Assessment and
Tuition Service (MAATS)
for disabled people who wish to undertake driving lessons or who may wish
to resume driving. A three-week course is also run by the Disabled
Drivers Association at their residential centre in Ballindine, Co. Mayo.
Motorised Transport Grant
A mean's tested grant is available from the local area health board for the
conversion or purchase of an adapted motor vehicle. Further application and
eligibility details can be obtained from your local Citizen's
Information Centre or your local area health board.
Discounts and Exemptions on the Purchase of a Car
Members of the Disabled
Drivers Association in the case of the purchase of a new car are entitled
to an exemption on the payment of Vehicle Registration Tax. In some instances
disabled drivers are also entitled to exemptions from VAT and petrol/ diesel
excise duties and the payment of road tax.
