Wheelchair accessible buses are now being used upon many routes as part of our public transport system. Wheelchair accessible buses each have a single entrance and exit door located at the front. Two-thirds of the internal floor space is flat, providing space for wheelchair users and pushchairs.
The floor height at the door is normally 320mm above the ground, when the bus kneels at designated stops; this height is reduced to 240mm, or only 140mm above a standard 100mm kerb. For wheelchair users and pushchairs, this gap can be bridged by a ramp that can be extended automatically by the driver.
The drivers on the route have been specially trained to operate the new equipment and given additional training in disability awareness. Where necessary kerbs have been raised to 100mm, while shelters have also been re-sited thereby facilitating improved accessibility for wheelchair users. Traffic orders discourage motorists from parking at bus stops and preventing buses from parking too close to the kerb.
Bus Eireann since 1997 also undertook a commitment that all future bus purchases for city and local services would be single decked and of a type that are fully accessible to wheelchair users. However, in terms of Expressway and long distance commuter routes, existing coach designs can prevent wheelchair access.
Details on the service routes and timetables can be accessed from Bus Átha Cliath (www.dublinbus.ie) and Bus Eireann (www.buseireann.ie).
