The Wicklow Way Walk & Happy Birthday CIL

A four day traverse of the Wicklow Way was held in 2002 to celebrate ten years of the Center for Independent Living. The walk commenced on the 19th of September 2002 in Marley Park and finished on Monday 23rd in Clonegal.

An estimated €10,000 was raised towards developing a center in Banjaluka, Bosnia for  people with disabilities.

Political Journalist Chris Lennon and disabled rights campaigner, Kathy Sinnot took part in the 10k walk through the forests of Glenmalure.

Glenmalure is a breathtakingly beautiful, glacier valley in the Wicklow Mountains National Park, Ireland.

The three wheelchair participants who finished up in Clonegal were: Tony Moloney, Dublin; John Doyle from Bray; and Sam Casey of Dublin.

They were accompanied by a number of other people who had completed the 82 mile trip, including Ned Deering from Carlow who along with Martin Naughton, were project coordinators.

The participants completed some 20 miles each day. The first night's stop was in Knockrea , County Wicklow and on Friday night, the participant's stopover  was at Glendalough.

On Saturday the group went from Glendalough to Glenmalure, where the 10k walk took place. That night they enjoyed the hospitality at the Glenmalure Lodge. The Sunday night Stop was at Ashfield House, Tinaheely while on Monday during the last lap of their journey, the group maintained a tradition when stopping for a drink at the Dying Cow, the only roadside pub along the entire route!

Ed Jameson (pictured) had this to say ‘it was a great day, the turn out of participants was incredible, people came from all over Ireland in support and it was a fantastic opportunity to make new friends’

On the Monday night when the Wicklow Way had been fully completed there was a great sense of camraderie in Clonegal as photos were taken at the top of the village where there is a glass cased map of the Wicklow Way.
