In the first year of the year of the third Millennium, the Center for Independent Living hosted a major conference in Dublin called "Independent Living- Towards the New Millennium". The date was the 13th of April 2000. The setting was Clontarf Castle. The purpose of the conference was to open up a debate on the Independent Living Movement here in Ireland and to establish a benchmark to inform further growth into the millennium.
The conference recognised that the Irish disability community had progressed significantly over the years from passive dependency to a movement that is dynamic, policy driven, focused and single-minded. However the conference equally recognised that much remained to be achieved. The conference aimed at setting out what direction the movement was going in and how the goals of the movement could be achieved.
In attendance were members of the disability community, policy makers, social partners and even some politicians! (Mary Wallace T.D. Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform). Also in attendance was Judith E. Heumann (Assistant Secretary of Education for the Office of Special Education and rehabilitation Services and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research manages a combined budget of over $8 billion).
