Cleaning Up After U2!

When you look through the history of CIL, it is noticeable that the organisation has a lot of well known friends - such as Liam O'Maonlai and Christy Moore.

CIL also has some history with Ireland's best known rock group, U2.

In 1993, U2 offered the Center for Independent Living a contract to clean up after their Zooropa Tour shows.

The CIL organised teams of volunteers to conduct a massive clean-up after each of the U2 gigs in Pairc Ui Caoimh and the RDS.

The CIL members got the chance to see the Zooropa gigs for free, while U2's payment for the job helped boost the financial situation of the Center for Independent Living. Apart from running the mop-up operation, the Center for Independent Living also had an information booth at all Zooropa concerts to raise awareness about their main aims.

In an Evening Press Report of the 19th of August 1993,

Jana Overbo of the CIL is quoted as having said: "We rely on fund-raising to keep going, but we don't like the "give a few bob to the crippled people" approach which is used by other groups ...We've been trying to find ways to raise money which maintain our dignity and this is perfect for us."
