Donegal CIL has put together a fantastic 2005 calendar in conjunction with Finn Harps Football Club, Ballybofey, in order to raise positive awareness and funds (!) in a very innovative way! The theme is about achieving independent and equal rights within society and the price is a very reasonable €7.00 (€5+€2 p&p). On the weekend of December 3-5 many participants of the 2003 Freedom Drive to Strasbourg got together for a reunion in Ennis, both to recall the 2003 trip and to start planning for ''Strasbourg Freedom Drive 2005!' Although successful in terms of strengthening solidarity amongst people with disabilities, it was accepted that the 2003 campaign did not realize the Eight Key Demands it set out to achieve. In October 2003, Galway City Partnership (GCP) made a submission to the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government to introduce a Disability Access Certificate. The news of the first week of October 2004 is that the Department intend to introduce the Access Certificate as part of their Disability Strategy!

October 15th is the release date for this film from the director of 'East Is East' and 'Heartlands'. The film follows twenty four year old Michael (Steven Robertson), who has cerebral palsy and is a long-term resident of Carrigmore Residential Home, run by Eileen (Brenda Fricker). Michael's life is transformed when rebellious Rory O'Shea moves into the next room, with both young men setting up a flat of their own and finding a PA - who turns out to be a girl for whom they both start to feel strongly about.

On September 21 2004, the Government launched their long awaited ‘National Disability Strategy'. Under this new legislation, anyone with a disability is entitled to an independent assessment of need, with an individual service plan drawn up in response to the assessment. The Legislation consists of four elements - the Disability Bill, Comhairle (Amendment) Bill, six outline Sectoral Plans and commitment to a multi-annual Investment Programme for disability support services. The NUI Maynooth Certificate in Disability Studies Course has been redesigned and launched this year as part of the Universtities Continuing Education Outreach Programme. The Course will be delivered off-campus by five different Centres around the country. Click here for further information on the course and how to participate.
CIL, Carmichael House are co-ordinating one of the Certificate in Disability Studies courses aimed specifically at CIL Managers. The first course module took place from June 22-24 in Wicklow. The second module took place October 5-7 in Kilcuan, Clarenbridge, Co. Galway. The third module took place November 16-18, also in Galway. Two more modules are scheduled for February and April 2005. captures the essence of the Independent Living wave currently sweeping across
Europe. Interviews and coverage of meetings highlight the tremendous power
that is currently behind the notion of Independent Living throughout Europe.
