This first meeting of 2006 was about looking at NAG Operational matters and was the last meeting facilitated by Meitheal for the forseeable future. A chairperson was elected (Toni Gleeson) and a 'Membership' sub-committee formed with a two-fold remit - to actively progress NAG membership (HSE membership suggested, with NDA membership being pursued) and to look at all the 'micro' level issues such as the different ways in which members are elected/approached to be part of the group, alternates and departures from the group. It was agreed that two 'continuity' positions be part of the group also - for individuals who were not elected etc. but supporting membership changeovers for a maximum of one year. A brief update on work already happening within the CIL Network around some of the goals in the NAG Strategic Plan was given, and the group discussed what 'operational plan' areas to work on next. Examination of the groups policy position was suggested, as was the need to build a real relationship between individuals within the group. It was provisionally planned that the group hold a full days get-together (hopefully 31 May), to stabilise and deal with the pressures, issues, equality within the group, roles and letting go the micro issues to look at the macro ones. It was further agreed that to help with meeting time-pressures, some/all NAG meetings might have a presentation around specific areas. The first of these will be prepared by NAG member Donal Toolan, who will do a 2-page paper for the next meeting on 1) best use of the Strategic Plan 2) communicating it beyond today and stakeholders we might work with. In addition, it was agreed that each member organisation send a brief update on elements of their organisations work directly impacting on the goals of NAG, prior to the quarterly meetings for inclusion in the NAG update document. Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 24th May.
The meeting began with a presentation on the 'Training
as a Vehicle to Employment' project, a two-year EU project which CIL Carmichael
House is involved with. Cathy McGrath outlined the project goal - to test,
develop and promote measures to ensure that National Government Agencies
traineeships are fully inclusive, as well as examining the projects expected
outcomes.
Following this, each of the members gave an account of work their organisations
are involved with since the last meeting that directly impact on the goals
of NAG. The current two sub-groups gave a brief report to the members. The
Membership sub-group discussed prospective members already approached, and
the entire group looked at the possibility of inviting other members on
board. A suggestion was made however that instead of inviting more members
to sit on the group (and the subsequent difficulty in sustaining the level
of commitment required), NAG should invite them to speak at specific meetings,
and/or take part in certain areas. The NAG Team-Building day subgroup outlined
the agenda for the groups development day on May 31st in the Guinness Storehouse.
The area of NAG funding was addressed, with a suggestion made that the group
apply for EDS funding for group development. It was also suggested that
group members speak at at least 6 meetings/events taking place over the
next 12 months about NAG and its agenda. In general it was agreed that the
group must now put NAG out there at every opportunity.
