Overview:

West Limerick Independent Living was founded in 1996 and became a company limited by guarantee one year later.

West Limerick Independent Living was founded by a small group of people from Limerick, many of whom have a disability. Since it's inception the organisation has served people with disabilities throughout Limerick City and County, parts of County Clare and a small number of third level institutions in Limerick.

Current Activities:

Day Service:

West Limerick Independent Living operates a day service in partnership with Rathfredagh Cheshire and the Limerick branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association. The day service operates one day a week throughout the year and caters for approximately fifteen people.

Transport Service:

Transport services operates on average five days a week and weekend’s subject to availability, the single average weekly passenger number carried was approximately fifty individuals.

Personal Support Service:

Personal Support Services, which includes Personal Assistants and a Care Assistant Service, delivered Personal Support Services to fifty eight people with disabilities in 2003, twenty two of whom received facilitated personal assistant service and thirty six received care assistant services.

People Behind West Limerick Independent Living:

Mr. David Noonan (Chairperson): Mr. Noonan is a retired business executive who is closely involved with many disability organisations in Limerick.
Ms. Ann Shine (Director): Lifting and Handling Instructor who is currently involved with a number of community sport organisations.
Mr. Tim Corbett, Director: Retired from Shannon Development Mr. Corbett is an active Member of Fianna Fail and a Director of County Limerick and North Cork Transport Group Ltd.
Mr. Michael O’Connor, Director and Company Secretary: Mr. O'Connor is a Personal Assistant and is actively involved with many local community groups.
Mr. Gerard O’Connor, Managing Director: Mr. O'Connor is involved with numerous local voluntary organisations and companies.

Service User and Personal Assistant Handbook (WLCIL website)
It is generally agreed that the Service User and Personal Assistant relationship is a very complex one. In most cases it is a one-to-one relationship, which on occasions, can become intense and personal. The vulnerability of both parties must be considered in order to guard against any upsets that may occur and to establish professional boundaries. If both parties understand exactly what their responsibilities are then problems are less likely to materialise. West Limerick Independent Living have recently published a Handbook for Service Users and PA's to assist them to develop good working relationships.
