Training as Vehicle to Employment Project - 2006/2007

CIL Dublin is participating in this EU wide project, lead by the Institute for Independent Living in Sweden. Other countries involved are: Germany, Poland, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Spain, Slovenia, Bosnia and Bulgaria. This two year project will see organisations situated across Europe who espouse the independent living philosophy work toward focusing national government agencies' traineeships in order to develop, test and promote a set of measures which, hopefully, would make them inclusive regarding persons with disabilities.

The background to the project lies in the reality which exists in each European country – lack of work experience is a major obstacle to employment. People with disabilities are extremely under-represented in national and EU programmes for youth exchanges and internships. In order to apply for jobs, people with disabilities need easily accessible information, in particular about accommodations within the workplace, the availability of accessible housing and transportation, personal assistance services and so on.

By getting National Government Departments and their agencies fully committed to including qualified people with disabilities, the overall aim is to see examples of good practice emerge. This will oblige not only other public sector employers, but also corporations and NGO's (in particular NGO's in the field of disability), to take up the example.

March '06 Key Activities - 1. Working on the compilation of evidence as outlined above for the newsletter due end of April. 2. Deciding upon which key agencies within the public & private sectors should be invited to be a part of a network / steering committee, ideally to have some of this structure in place by the end of May. 3. Working to promote the project within CILS to ensure full participation of the CIL network (process initiated at a presentation given to the CIL Network on 18 February 2006) 15-18 February '06 - In this three day workshop taking place in Stockholm, Sweden, and attended by CIL Dublin, project partners discussed and finalised project methodology as well as each partners respective functions and roles.
