Leaders shoulder a lot of responsibility that often leads to a feeling of isolation – especially as the practice of Independent Living is not as widespread as once believed. It has become more and more clear that there is a need for specific training on the practice and development of Independent Living.
NUI Maynooth Certificate in Disability Studies
The NUI Maynooth Certificate in Disability Studies Course was redesigned and launched in 2004 as part of the Universities Continuing Education Outreach Programme. More academic in nature, the course now addresses real Independent Living issues, examining current models of disability, evaluating issues of power, gender, and oppression, and exploring the barriers to inclusion which people with disabilities experience. The certificate was delivered off-campus by three centres in the 2004/05 session - CIL Carmichael House, Dublin; Mountmellick Development Association, Laois; and County Roscommon Higher Education Centre, Boyle.
The need to run an instance of the course specifically for CIL Managers/key decision makers was identified during National CIL meetings in 2004. CIL Carmichael House ran this course during the 2004/2005 academic year - a total of 14 managers registered. The CILs of each participant supported in terms of time for course attendance, travel and study. Click here to read about the course progress.
