National Leader Forum

“A National Leader Forum is vital to the progress of Independent Living for all Leaders throughout Ireland, working to give a voice to Leaders’ thinking around the country, to ensure each user of PA services has a say in the delivery of and quality of service provision, to develop a solid lobby group and ensure the barriers of isolation faced by individual users are broken down'
(NLF consultative sessions)

The need for a National Leader Forum (NLF) has long been identified as vital to providing sustained leader support independent of any one organisation or service provider. In 2003 a group of leaders who avail of a PA service themselves, met a number of times in order to explore the possible elements of such a forum. This Leader consultative group planned, with the support of CIL Carmichael House, to develop a channel to feed back information and to consult with Leaders - improving Leader awareness and creating a strong lobbying power for influencing policy countrywide, through peer support, group development, training and action. To this end the group created a Leader Forum Discussion Document, outlining key aims and objectives, and a possible working model for groups and leaders countrywide to consider and reshape. It was circulated to five CILs outside of Dublin in late 2003. The overwhelming consensus from Leader responses was that the establishment of the forum would be a positive step forward.

The NLF Steering Group met in May 2006 to recap the original Terms of Reference for the group and examine the current status of the Dublin leader Forum, as well as the more recently formed North East Leader Forum and DPOC Leader Forum. Those present acknowledged the importance of ensuring plans for Leader Forums become a reality over the next 6-8 months.
