As a result of discussions throughout 2005 with the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM), around training development, potential has been identified for a new area of research into the Independent Living (IL) movement in Ireland.
In order to better understand the needs of the CIL network, we must understand how different CILS have developed and evolved. A research project has been suggested which will examine the history, evolution, structure, work and ambitions of individual CILs. This may take the form of participant style research, with the involvement and direction of CILs in the research process.
It is thought that the resulting research may result in a 'book', telling the story of individual CILs, their history and evolution, the services they provide and their hopes and ambitions for the future. This could in turn, help to highlight the IL movement, becoming a resource for further research in this area, as well as clarifying the needs of CILs in order that future planning might be targeted in the most efficient way.
It is hoped that, resources allowing, work may begin on clarifying the parameters of this project and beginning same in 2006.
