Third National CIL Meeting
- Saturday, October 23, 2004

Chief O'Neil's Hotel, Smithfield, Dublin 7

Following an introduction by Don Bailey, (Treasurer CIL Carmichael House), a brief report on the 'Training for Managers' programme was given by Catherine Gorman, and on 'Communications' by Derval Sheridan, both from the CIL Carmichael House office.

National Advisory Group

However, the mornings main topic was the National Advisory Group (NAG). NAG members Anne Marie Flanagan (DPOC) and Toni Gleeson (DFI) first outlined the worries and concerns regarding the formation of the National Advisory Group which were raised at the last National CIL meeting.   They then reported on the groups work to date, outlining a draft Terms of Reference describing its vision and purpose, and emphasising that its final form and further development depended on feedback from the group present at the meeting and indeed all National CILs.

Interested parties were encouraged to join the group, and feed into its development prior to its full establishment in February 2005, when current group membership will expire, with the completion of a NAG Strategic Plan. At this time a new NAG group will be formed in order to implement the plan. At this point the assembly broke into smaller groups to discuss whether this feedback relieved fears regarding the NAG group outlined at the last National CIL meeting. The meeting re-assembled to explore and record each groups feedback.

Afternoon

The afternoon began with an overview of the work and history of Cork CIL, given by Richard O'Leary and Nicola Meacle. They spoke about their 'PA in the workplace' project and also Cork CILs recent decision not to provide PA services to the South Lee area when asked to do so by the Health Board.

Following that, Michael Nestor gave an overview of Offaly CIL, with Mary Grogan outlining their very successful ‘Partners in Education' Project.

Next the group heard an update on the National Leader Forum, given by Kate McAllister (CIL, Carmichael House).

Finally, with time pressing, Toni Gleeson and Tim Brennan (CIL, Carmichael House) quickly led the group through the main points of the recently published Disability Legislation, pausing for discussion and debate.
